Fruity Piggybacks

Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith's upcoming album, due in August, is called Gush and the title track is the third song to be released with an accompanying video.

As with the first single, Into Your Eyes, there's an intriguing fruit theme, although it has to be said that the banana and orange in Gush suffer a less ignominious fate.

Another artist that I'm familiar with but poorly represented in my own music collection, I own just four Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith songs currently: two from Mojo magazine freebie CDs released in 2018 and 2020; one from 2022's EarthPercent x Earth Day Compilation Album; a solitary remix of King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard from the same year.

In an attempt to redress the balance, I had a dig around Kaitlyn's Bandcamp page and unearthed some more treasures from her back catalogue.

The Neptunes EP came out in November last year, a collaboration with Joe Goddard that also sees them remix each others songs. Kaitlyn's remix of Rapid Fire by Joe featuring Laima closes the EP and is a doozy.

2023's Let's Turn It Into Sound Remixes EP reworks three songs from the previous year's album of the same name, including a beautifully chilled-but- glitchy remix of Check Your Translation by fellow Los Angeles resident Hrishikesh Hirway.

2020 album The Mosaic of Transformation also got the remix EP treatment with a breezy and jaunty run along The Spine Is Quiet In The Center by Fools aka Christopher Bear, also an Angeleno.

From 2017, a remix of I Will Make Room for You by Four Tet from her album The Kid. It's Kieran Hebdenso it's going to be special and this sits comfortably with anything from his own back catalogue.

Back to forthcoming album Gush and the second single/video release, What's Between Us, which features some morbidly fascinating choreography, though my back is aching in sympathy just from watching it for four minutes.

Gush is available for pre-order right now. There's no Bandcamp Friday this month, so I have added Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith to my shopping list for May.

Trust Me, I'll Follow You On Tuesday

Summer has been a little stop-start-stop-start round here, but Joe Goddard's delivered the cure with Follow You.

Four minutes and twenty four seconds of chiming synths, full fat bass and mellow vocal harmonies, this will probably be smashing it in the Balearics (no euphemism intended). I'll have to make do with the depths of the Forest of Dean and the heart of the Cotswolds this week, but frankly this should give you a lift wherever you experience it.

This is the third release from forthcoming album, Harmonics, out in a couple of weeks and another album to go on the impossibly long shopping list.

Follow You got me in the mood for more Joe, so here's a selection of Joe remixing and being remixed, going all the way back to his debut solo release in 2009.

Let's Go Back (Joe Goddard Remix): Kraak & Smaak ft. Romanthony (2023)
All That You Want (Joe Goddard Remix): Ibibio Sound Machine (2022)
Starseeds (Joe Goddard Remix): Seahawks (2020)
Happyface (Joe Goddard Remix): ALASKALASKA (2019)
Children (Hercules & Love Affair Remix): Joe Goddard (2017)
Gabriel (Soulwax Remix): Joe Goddard ft. Valentina (2012)
Apple Bobbing (Four Tet Remix):Joe Goddard (2009)

Flamingo Out Of Your Mind

Dan Snaith aka Caribou released his first new song in nearly three years at the beginning of April.

Honey is a four-minute banger, closer to the club-friendly style of his other nom de plume Daphni than the unadulterated psychedelic Sixties stylings of Caribou. Yet, Dan has had no hesitation in giving the latter's music over to other artists for a radical makeover, including friend and sounding board Kieran Hebden aka Four Tet.

No surprise then to read that Kieran has had a hand in arranging this song with Dan. Honey is mixed by long time collaborator David Wrench, whose current project audiobooks with Evangeline Ling is no stranger to lure of the dancefloor either.

No sign of any remixes as yet, but Honey is accompanied by a mind-melting video. Avoid staring at blank walls after watching this, otherwise you'll be seeing flamingos for hours afterwards.

On the Bandcamp Friday just gone (and the last one until September), Dan was also offering his digital back catalogue as a name your price option so I took the opportunity to pick up the remix companions for the albums Swim (2010) and Suddenly (2020). I'd had a few tracks of each so it was a good chance to purchase the full collections.

Two of the previously owned remixes included the above mentioned artists, so here's Never Come Back from Suddenly, reworked by Four Tet, and Odessa from Swim stripped down to a 'drumapella' by David Wrench. I'm looking forward to listening to the rest over the coming week.

Maman Chérie

Celebrating Neneh Cherry, born 10th March 1964, and in my opinion one of the greatest artists ever to grace this planet.

Sometimes, this blog virtually writes itself, the planets aligning to provide serendipitous moments and opportunities.

Realising a short while ago that it was Neneh's 60th birthday today kick started this week's entire birthday-themed posts.

Today is Mother's Day. Sundanese is the second largest language spoken in Indonesia. The Sundanese word for mother is...Neneh.

Chérie translates from French as darling, but Neneh also adopted the name for an EP of remixes by French artists in 1997.

So really, it was always going to be Neneh Cherry today, whether I was consciously aware of it or not.

On the surface, Neneh has 'only' released four solo albums since Raw Like Sushi turned the world on its head in 1988. But her work and cultural impact goes much deeper and wider than that.

School drop out at 14. Arriving in London at 15 and hooking up with The Slits. The Cherries. New Age Steppers. Rip Rig + Panic. Hanging out with The Wild Bunch in Bristol and the origins of Buffalo Stance as a B-side remix for Morgan-McVey (the latter soon-to-be husband and musical partner Cameron McVey).

And then there's Neneh continual collaboration and reinvention, with Matt Johnson (The The), Tricky, Seven Seconds with Youssou N'Dour, appearing on Top Of The Pops whilst pregnant, effortlessly brilliant in the 2007 BBC2 cookery show Neneh and Andi – Dish It Up with bezzy mate (and Rip Rig + Panic bandmate) Andi Oliver.

Continuing to astonish in the 21st century, Neneh has worked with Swedish trio The Thing and formed cirKus with husband Cameron McVey, daughter Lolita Moon and Matt Kent. Neneh's last two albums have been a further evolution of her music in partnership with Kieran Hebden aka Four Tet.

Bearing all of this in mind, there's no way that I could do justice to Neneh with merely one Dubhed selection. So, to celebrate, here are two one-hour selections, twenty-two tracks strong. Not a comprehensive career-spanning collection - no New Age Steppers, for example - but it does attempt to convey why I think Neneh is one of the greatest artists ever to grace this planet.

There's a self-deprecating comment attributed to Neneh as a "singer that does a bit of rapping". She is - and always has been - so much more. An icon and a legend, in the true sense of the words.

Happy birthday, Neneh, and thank you. You are loved.

God Save The Ing

...that is, if your thing is dancing, jigging, shaking or some other ing that involves moving, because the next hour and an a half is all about the beats.

2023 has been a great year so far, musically speaking and as I hope this 14-track selection ably demonstrates. Several long-time favourites have returned with a vengeance: Cerrone, DJ Nature, A Man Called Adam and Four Tet; all delivering music as good as anything in their rich and varied catalogue.

Others have done so in collaboration: Justin Robertson meets David Holmes' Unloved in the Temple Of Wonders; Telefís aka Cathal Coughlan (RIP) and Jacknife Lee holiday in Madrid with Howie B; Hifi Sean and David McAlmont take a dub excursion to another Happy Ending.

Some relatively recent discoveries continue to delight: Jezebell, Max Essa and Duncan Gray have all somehow managed to raise the bar with each successive release; how high can they go?

The rest are all artists that I've heard for the first time this year: Minus Yogis, Bárbara Boeing, Cee ElAssaad, DjClick and Masha Natanson; all very different, all worth further investigation.

Apart from Four Tet, I'm not sure if any of these artists will be troubling a stage at Glastonbury next week (though to be honest, my eyesight starting blurring after the tenth or eleventh scroll through the seemingly endless line-up page on their website). If they did though, I think they'd smash it.

1) A Part Of You (Club Mix): Cerrone
2) Follow Your Dreams: DJ Nature
3) Fruity Blues (Balearic Mix By Minus Yogis): Minus Yogis
4) It's Science Baby (Funkified): A Man Called Adam
5) Trading Places (6PM): Jezebell
6) Thrill Me (Justin Robertson's Temple Of Wonders Remix): Unloved
7) Short Haul: Duncan Gray
8) Beautiful (Hifi's Dub Excursion): Hifi Sean & David McAlmont
9) Baile Do Silêncio (Donald Dust Remix): Bárbara Boeing
10) Njalo (Full Length Version): Cee ElAssaad
11) Come Come The Rain (Club Mix): Max Essa ft. DC Mathias
12) Strawboy Supernova (Madrid Metal By Howie B): Telefís

What Have I Done? Where Have You Gone?

Today's selection features Caribou aka Dan Snaith and is a good example of one of the motivating forces behind this blog, a simple excuse to rummage around in my virtual record box and dust off some music that I haven't listened to in a while.

Dan Snaith's been poorly served by my collection in that regard as I have relatively little of his music, far less than I thought to be honest, a few hours' worth spread across EPs, album tracks and remixes for other artists. Hardly anything from the past decade either, which I need to address.

I first encountered Dan Snaith via Jockey Slut, an essential read in the 1990s*. By the start of the 21st century, it was on it's last legs I guess but in those final moments it delivered a brilliant series of cover-mounted CDs across a year titled Disco Pogo For Punks In Pumps. Volume 4 (March 2003) kicked off with Hendrix With Ko by Manitoba, Snaith's original stage name.

By chance, I happened to be at a record fair shortly after and, amongst my music haul, came away with a promo CD of the Jacknuggeted EP by Manitoba. Shortly after releasing second album Up In Flames, Dan Snaith was subject to threats of legal action from Richard 'Handsome Dick' Manitoba and thus Caribou was born.

As both names suggest, Dan was born in Canada and I don't know if it's the foreknowledge of this but listening to his music evokes imagery of driving through forests, mountains in the background, passing by vast lakes and grasslands, a hint of hidden life deep beyond the trees that race past in a blur. Or sometimes, it just sounds like a modern take on Sixties psychedelic folk. Either way, there's something comforting yet uncomfortable about listening to his work.

Over three quarters of an hour, you can find out for yourself, as Dan meets Hot Chip, Oh No Ono, Kelley Polar and Jack Tennis and revisits his old band before returning home with David Wrench to watch the sun go down and day turn to night. Beats a washed out Wednesday in the UK, in my book.

1) She's The One (Hot Chip Remix By Joe Goddard): Caribou (2007)
2) Eleanor Speaks (Caribou Remix): Oh No Ono (2010)
3) We Live In An Expanding Universe (Caribou Remix): Kelley Polar (2008)
4) Melody Day (Four Tet Remix By Kieran Hebden): Caribou (2007)
5) Olé: Manitoba (2003)
6) Sun (Jack Tennis Remix By Tobi Schwermann): Caribou (2010)
7) After Hours (Album Version By Dan Snaith & David Wrench): Caribou (2007)

The Closest Thing To Organised Mass Zombie-dom

The summer - and perhaps more specifically, the festival season - has seen a steady stream of new music from 'old' artists, invoking the spirit of the 1990s with some frankly quite spectacular bangers.

The seemingly indefatigable Orbital has this year finally been able to properly celebrate three decades, including the release of 30-Something. Eschewing the usual 'best of' compilation, the collection comprises their own '30 Years Later' reworkings alongside remixes by David Holmes, Jon Hopkins, ANNA, Shanti Celeste and Joris Voorn amongst others.

Inevitably, there are a couple of new tracks, including Smiley, which goes right back to Orbital's origins, sampling ITV's 1988 World in Action documentary A Trip Round Acid House (including an interview with 20-old year Paul Hartnoll). The song's title pays tribute to the Smiley Face symbol, officially 50 years old in 2022, which was used in the legendary DC Comics series Watchmen in 1986-1987 and subsequently associated with Acid House. A great song and a brilliant video.
Not to be outdone, Leftfield is also back with Pulse, a precursor to new album This Is What We Do. Originally a duo of Neil Barnes and Paul Daley until 2002, Barnes restarted Leftfield in 2010 and the current iteration has now been going as long as the original incarnation. The pre-release buzz is already comparing the new album to Leftism; in a nod to the latter, Lemn Sissay returns on one track and mirroring Toni Halliday (Curve)'s guest vocals, This Is What We Do features Fontaines D.C. frontperson Grian Chatten.

Pulse reminds me more of Phat Planet than anything off of Leftism and I love it. Pulse sounds fantastic on headphones, I can only imagine what it's like in a club or festival setting.
There's already been a lot of excitement and praise for Reset, the inspired collaboration between Panda Bear and Sonic Boom, and with good reason. Lead single Go On was an absolute blast and follow up Edge Of The Edge is just as wonderful, channeling Brian Wilson and, unsurprising given the artists involved, a mind-bending video. There is an online listening party for Reset tonight, ahead of the album's digital release on 12th August. The event includes a live chat with Sonic Boom and premiere of third single/video, Danger. I've only heard two songs so far and I'm already expecting Reset to place high amongst my favourite albums of 2022.
No video for the new single by Four Tet, released yesterday (10th), but I had to include it. Kieran Hebden has been promising some "unreleased bangers" since the end of July and Mango Feedback was included in his rather fine Glastonbury set which I managed to catch on BBC iPlayer. Mango Feedback is another track that is feels very now but also evocative of an earlier era. I immediately thought of Found Sound-era Spooky remixed by Todd Terry. Watersmyth is perhaps more 'typical' Four Tet, a pulsing, bleeping ambient trip that fades out after four minutes but could easily go on and on and on.

New kids on the block (no, not them!) Jezebell have been on a roll since their first release, Thrill Me - was it really only November 2021? Hot on the heels of July's Jezebellearica EP, 30th September sees the release of the Jezebellectro EP on quality Berlin label Nein Records. Lead track Dumbell is available to preview now and it's another cracker. Built upon a sampled break from a classic 80s 12" that I haven't yet featured here but spookily enough name checked last week, there are other recognisable samples dropped in that make for an inspired six-and-a-half minutes. The EP includes two remixes of Dumbell by Ian Vale and ADJ aka Andy Jaggers, plus another new track, the intriugingly-titled The Jezebell Spirit. I honestly get a big smile whenever the latest Jezebell release drops and they are currently keeping 'em coming!

If you like what you hear, you can buy or pre-order from the following outlets (as ever, other retail options are available):

30-Something by Orbital (deluxe CD via official website)
This Is What We Do by Leftfield (pre-order exclusive vinyl & CD via Rough Trade)

Is There Room In Your Life For One More Trip To The Moon?

In case you were disappointed by Friday's lack of beat-laden bangers, here's a suitably slipshod mix to see in Saturday.

As usual, it's an eclectic mix spanning 1993 to 2022. It may not keep you moving, as k.d. lang implores, but you will hopefully get an involuntary twitch or jerk here and there. I would like to apologise for the cack-handed segueways and fade ins but if I did, I'd have to do so for each and every track. Hopefully, the quality of the tunes will encourage you to overlook my enthusiastic but amateurish approach...!

A couple of current loves in here, including one of many excellent remixes of the current David Holmes single and the latest in a consistent series of great one-off tracks by Pye Corner Audio aka Martin Jenkins. There are some reworkings of musical legends Gong, Kraftwerk and The Cure and - I couldn't resist - two helpings of Andrew Weatherall, back-to-back.

The opening twofer by Baron Von Luxxury aka Blake Robin and k.d. lang remixed by Tony Garcia may be a bit of red herring regarding the subsequent direction of the mix, but I think it just about works.

I've also dropped in a bit of uptempo Four Tet, from Kieran Hebden's excellent 2020 album Parallels, as well as Confidence Man. The latter track might be from 2017, but their current album Tilt is on constant rotation at Casa Khayem.

To close, another Dubhed favourite, Dan Wainwright. Dan and his partner Elle Redding have just released a new album, Mother Oak, which I received this week, so expect to a further appearance here in the not too distant future.

1) I'm Not Bad, I'm Just Drawn That Way (Instrumental): Baron Von Luxxury (2013)
2) Just Keep Me Moving (Wild Planet Mix By Tony Garcia): k.d. lang (1993)
3) It's Over, If We Run Out Of Love (Working Mens Club Remix): David Holmes ft. Raven Violet (2022)
4) A Sprinkling Of Clouds (Belly Dance Mix By System 7): Gong (1999)
5) Evidence The Enemy: Andrew Weatherall (2017)
6) Bubblegum (Andrew Weatherall Remix): Confidence Man (2017)
7) Aerodynamik (Intelligent Design Mix By Alexis Taylor & Joe Goddard): Kraftwerk (2007)
8) Wrong Number (Crossed Line Mix By Omid Nourizadeh): The Cure (1997)
9) Parallel 8: Four Tet (2020)
10) Dirty Window Of Opportunity: Pye Corner Audio (2022)
11) Nothing Ever Stays The Same: Dan Wainwright (2021)

Raindrops Keep Falling

Thirteen songs to sail through a soggy Sunday. Select cuts from some of my favourite EPs, albums and remixes from the last couple of years, several purchased on Bandcamp Friday, which will be continuing for the rest of this year. It won't be a great surprise to see Dan Wainwright, Andy Bell/GLOK or Pye Corner Audio here, but there have been a few unexpected 'comebacks' from Ultramarine and D:Ream, which I've really enjoyed.

1) I Love You: Dan Wainwright (2021)
2) Ride Or Die (Single Version): Boys Noize ft. Kelsey Lu & Chilly Gonzales (2021)
3) Parallel 6: Four Tet (2020)
4) Meet Me At Midnight (Dan Wainwright Remix): D:Ream (2021)
5) In My Sleep (DJ Nature Remix By Milo Johnson): Margee (2021)
6) Lagrimas De San Lorenzo (Coyote Remix): Chris Coco & George Solar (2021)
7) That Time Of Night (Single Version): GLOK ft. Shiarra (2021)
8) Memory Of Rave: Pye Corner Audio (2020)
9) Fledgling Sun: The Future Sound Of London (2021)
10) Rickie's Alibi: Andres Y Xavi (2021)
11) The Commune (Pye Corner Audio Remix): Andy Bell (2021)
