How Can It Be Remixed?

45 minutes of glacial Norwegian pop, courtesy of a-ha.

Most of these are 12" extended versions from the 1980s, including a couple that remained unreleased until 2016. I've also opted for one contemporary 21st century remix, plus revamps of their two biggest songs from the same decade.

Mark Vidler aka Go Home Productions is perhaps best known as a master of the mash-up, but also turned his hand to some (unofficial) remixes. The Sun Always Shines On T.V. appeared on a GHP compilation in 2007 but dates from 2-3 years previously.

The Twelves are a pair of Brazilian boys, clearly inspired by the likes of Daft Punk and Justice, who released music on the trendy Kitsune label and did tons of remixes for the hip and beautiful likes of New Young Pony Club, Black Kids, La Roux, Groove Armada and Fever Ray. Their remix of Take On Me appeared on a Chevrolet (Brazil)-commissioned promo for the Vectra GT sports car.

Of the rest, you get Morten Harket's vocals on full display, be it for ballads, club tracks or rockier numbers (or at least, Norway's singular take on the genre). I wouldn't call myself a huge fan of a-ha, then or now, but they knew how to write and play songs laden with hooks, for sure.

Happy Friday, everyone!

Unwrapped

After 2021's inaugural Boxing Day themed selection and 2022's even more tenuous link to gifts, I'm stretching credulity (and your patience) to the limit, with 14 wrap songs. That's wrap, not rap. And no, I've not hit the Harvey's Bristol Cream yet.

There are a couple of actual Christmassy songs in this selection, starting with Saint Etienne and a song from their fabulous festive album, A Glimpse Of Stocking. Randy Travis also makes a brief appearance, before Barry Adamson takes him around the back and duffs him up.

There's a bit of leftover mash (up) from Mark Vidler aka Go Home Productions - apart from The Police and Elvis Costello, how many other artists can you pick out? There's disco, Northern Soul, calypso (from O.M.D. no less), techno pop (for all you Amelia Fletcher fans out there) and some beautiful noise from The Delgados.

Green Gartside shares the mic with Annie Lennox, Idha (at least I think it's her) does the same with Edward Ball, whilst Gang Of Four clearly aren't sharing with anybody. There's a rare B-side from Sharkboy and to, ahem, wrap things up the single-that-nearly-was from XTC.

No refunds!

1) Unwrap Me: Saint Etienne (2010)
2) Shrinkwrapped: Gang Of Four (1995)
3) Wrap It Up: Eurythmics ft. Green Gartside (1982)
4) Wrapped Detective: Go Home Productions (2004)
5) Wrap My Arms Around Him: Amelia Fletcher (1991)
6) Wrap Your Arms Around Me: KC & The Sunshine Band (1976)
7) How Do I Wrap My Heart Up For Christmas: Randy Travis (1988)
8) Under Wraps: Barry Adamson (1989)
9) Gold Wrapper: Sharkboy (1993)
10) Wrapped, Tied And Tangled: LaVern Baker (1968)
11) All Wrapped Up: O.M.D. (1984)
12) Wrapped Up In Lonesome Blues: Edward Ball (1996)
13) Under Canvas Under Wraps: The Delgados (1996)
14) Wrapped In Grey: XTC (1992)

Fingers & Thumbs

One of those posts where the title pretty much says it all. Today's Dubhed Dozen features songs (and one artist) with either 'finger' or 'thumb' in the title. Sometimes, that's the extent of my thought process...!

I wasn't short on choices though and I like some of the unusual bedfellows that spring from these 'themed' selections. I mean, I don't think you're going to find another mix today that has an opening salvo of His Bobness, electronic duo Spooky, rap rascals Beastie Boys and Neil Young and Crazy Horse. I think it works, but you'll be the judge of that.

I detoured from the theme to include Stiff Little Fingers because, I mean, why not? Apologies to Larry Heard aka Mr. Fingers though, who just missed out in the final shortlist. Another time, Larry, another time.

Julian Cope of course has a song for every occasion and theme and today is no exception. Dubhed stalwart Andrew Weatherall could also have made the cut with a remix of a song by Jonny Halifax, in his day job as Honkeyfinger. Sadly, another one that didn't make the final 12 although it did pop up in one of my Weatherall mixes back in May 2021.

After a (mostly) guitar-driven run, Jenny Hval brings some calm and class and one might think a fitting close to proceedings. But no, I have to go and take the piss by bolting on a mash-up of The Beach Boys and a 1980s TV ad theme. Thanks (or insults) to Mark Vidler aka Go Home Productions, this may have been the song's sole opportunity to make an appearance on this blog so of course I had to do it.

1) Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues: Bob Dylan (1965)
2) Fingerbobs (Album Version): Spooky (1996)
3) Finger Lickin' Good (Government Cheese Mix): Beastie Boys (1992)
4) Powderfinger (Live): Neil Young & Crazy Horse (1978)
5) Soul Finger (Alternative Version) (Cover of The Bar-Kays): Dexy's Midnight Runners (1981)
6) Sore Thumb: Fujiya & Miyagi (2008)
7) Alternative Ulster: Stiff Little Fingers (1978)
8) Disposable Thumbs: Endless Boogie (2021)
9) The Air Near My Fingers: The White Stripes (2003)
10) She's Got A Ring On Her Finger (& Another One Through Her Nose): Julian Cope (2005)
11) Thumbsucker: Jenny Hval ft. Félicia Atkinson (2019)
12) Wouldn't It Be Nice To Have A Finger Of Fudge?: Go Home Productions (2008)

Oh iPod I Love You

A slightly different blast from the past today as I take another dip into the dusty archives of my previous blog. This selection was posted on 7th April 2007 as individual MP3s. Originally an iPod Top 20 most played selection, I've re-sequenced and re-created the playlist as two 'sides' which flow more naturally, to these ears at least. As you'll see, I was deep into an obsession with mash-ups at the time, which accounted for half of the Top 20.

Over to my former 30-something self...

I finally got around to upgrading from my much loved Panasonic portable cassette player to an iPod Nano last month. Even though I'm making very slow progress with uploading stuff from my record collection (about 500 songs so far, barely half the 4GB space), I've been giving my iPod a good run for it's money. It's been great to hear songs that I haven't listened to in a while, as well as discovering a whole load of stuff on the internet. The shuffle option has proved to be highly addictive when it comes to unusual playlists. I quit smoking (again) on Tuesday and (honest, guv) the moment I lit up my last fag, Chumbawamba's Give The Anarchist A Cigarette kicked into my headphones. Thankfully, so far my iPod's skipped John Lennon's Cold Turkey, which is also lurking in there somewhere...

To pick up the story, 15 years on, apart from the cliché of a celebratory cigar when Lady K was born, I've not smoked since and I have never been tempted to try vaping.

I've been through 5 iPod Nanos since that initial purchase (the green one in the picture, if you're wondering); I worked them very hard. The subsequent iPods were all cheap secondhand purchases from eBay and for varying reasons all eventually gave up. I think my iPods were less forgiving than SWC's over at No Badger Required...

You'll note that only 4 Nanos are pictured. The fifth - also pink and always the least wanted on eBay, it seems - fell from my pocket as I was racing to platform 12 at Leeds Railway Station to catch a train home. I saw it slide effortlessly across the platform before gliding briefly above the tracks then dropping down into the path of an incoming train. I'd like to say that either Dylan's Blood On The Tracks or Mylo's Destroy Rock & Roll was playing in that fateful moment but, to be honest, I don't remember and I was probably swearing too loudly to notice as I continued running for my train, my suddenly orphaned headphone cable trailing behind me...

I retired my last Nano a couple of years ago and sold the 4 defunct iPods as parts on eBay. These days, my headphone and in-car music listening is all on my phone, with a never-ending variation of playlists.

As for mash-ups, I still love them, but my frankly ridiculous habit of downloading and collecting hundreds of them had significantly dropped by the end of the 2000s. The artists that I followed now seem to have mostly retired from mash-ups and are focused on other music-related pursuits.

IDC aka David McCarthy has released two albums, Overthrow The Boss Class (2008) and The Sun is Always Shining Above The Clouds (2011) and, according to his website, album #3 is currently in production.

McSleazy seems to have been retired around 2010-2011 and Grant J. Robson has since worked as a soundtrack composer and solo artist. His 4th album, Lit By The Dark, was released in 2021 and features The Vaselines' Eugene Kelly on The Burden, which is rather wonderful.

Team9 also ceased some years ago by all accounts and I've struggled to find any current website for Neil Mason. Info suggests that Neil is still based in Perth and working as a soundtrack composer and music producer.

Go Home Productions last released a couple of mash-ups in 2020, but Mark Vidler has more recently been involved with Graham Daniels as Addictive TV, including the incredible Orchestra Of Samples project. Mark was recently pictured with Devo and John Lydon at the Cruel World Fest in Pasadena, California.

Loo & Placido aka Laurent Lupidi & Jeremy Johnson are still going strong, celebrating over 20 years of mash-ups, more recent beneficiaries being XXXTentacion, Billie Eilish, Chvrches and Post Malone.

Suffice to say, my digital music collection has grown exponentially since 2007 and my Top 20 most played list has significantly changed, skewed in part by school runs and Lady K's brief obsessions with Queen and, way out in front, Feel It Still by Portugal. The Man which was curtailed only by the lockdown in 2020. Of today's selection, only Lou Reed comes anywhere close, coming in at #84...

Anyway, enough of my yakking, without further ado here's today's selection for your listening pleasure.

Tori's Primal Joy

Exactly one year ago, I wrote about the Tori Amos song God, specifically The Dharma Kayã Mix by Manchester band The Joy, a 12 minute blissful excursion into ambient soundscapes that was a bit of a radical departure for Ms. Amos at the time.

The post then moved on to The Joy's own bonafide classic, Shine, featuring the wonderfully talented and much missed Denise Johnson. Denise also appeared on Primal Scream's epic track Screamadelica, which ironically didn't make it on to the classic album of the same name.

The original post included YouTube links to the featured songs, so I'm revisiting them with today's selection, albeit with a slight twist and tweak.

The selection is topped and tailed by Tori Amos, starting off with a song that I didn't feature last time, Raspberry Swirl, taken from 1998 album From The Choirgirl Hotel. Andy Gray, perhaps best known for replacing Steve Osborne as Paul Oakenfold's production partner in Perfecto and in turn responsible for the theme to reality TV show Big Brother, delivered a clutch of remixes for the single release, including this downtempo version.

The Joy's Shine is up next, not the 27 minute Hyperphoria Mix referenced in last year’s post but the Samadhi Mantra Mix, also remixed by The Joy's core of Ali Fletcher and David Tolan and coming in at a brisker 16 minutes.

From Shine to Screamadelica, but not as you know it. The original Andrew Weatherall production is a sheer joy, digging a groove for nearly 11 minutes. However, I'm saving that one for another time. Here, Mark Vidler aka Go Home Productions adds (his own) guitar to provide a blistering, kick ass version that comes in at a neat 5 minutes. Naturally, Denise Johnson's vocals are more than a match for this different setting, soaring effortlessly above the riffs. This version originally appeared on 2005 online bootleg compilation Screamixadelica.

Last but definitely not least is the remix that (re)started this post, The Dharma Kayã Mix of God by Tori Amos, every bit as good as when I first heard it, nearly three decades ago.

1) Raspberry Swirl (Scarlet Spectrum Feels) (Remix By Andy Gray): Tori Amos (1998)
2) Shine (Samadhi Mantra Mix): The Joy ft. Denise Johnson (1994)
3) Screamadelica (Go Home Productions' Skreamadelikka Mix By Mark Vidler): Primal Scream ft. Denise Johnson (2005)
4) God (The Dharma Kayã Mix By The Joy): Tori Amos (1994)

Can't You See That I Am Not Afraid?

You can blame Patrick Swayze for this one. I somehow found myself watching his 1989 'classic' film Road House - one of those nights where there's naff all on TV and you're too tired to watch anything too taxing. I won't dwell on the film - it's truly awful - though I managed an inward chuckle when I saw that the director's first name was Rowdy. Very apt.

Unsurprisingly, The Doors' Roadhouse Blues makes an appearance, albeit performed by the movie's bar band, in reality The Jeff Healey Band. Jeff also has a few lines with Swayze in the film, proving that he's also a great... guitar player.

Rather than going for the obvious and posting The Doors' original version of Roadhouse Blues, I've gone a bit Marmite and shovelled up a pile of 21st century remixes, which I guess you'll either love or hate. I'm in the former camp. Given the choice, I'd rather listen to this than the original motion picture soundtrack of Road House, even if it is currently going for 85p on Discogs...

Hawkesbury Upton Top Ranking

I posted this homemade, slipshod DJ Mix on my Mixcloud page just over a year ago, in the early weeks of the first UK lockdown. We're currently in the latter stages of lockdown #3, and starting to re-engage with the world. Seems like a good time to give this another airing...
