DeathMetalDiscoClubMeetsTheGuv'nor

After a few days of my amateur efforts, time for Andrew Weatherall's 65-minute master class in the art of the mix. A true professional.

Andrew recorded this mix for Amsterdam-based blog deathmetaldiscoclub in 2013 and it's a heady mix of beats and bass, as you might expect. Then new and unreleased music is threaded through, from his still-thrilling remixes of Emilíana Torrini and Craig Bratley, to choice cuts by Joe's Bakery (the heavyweight opener), Avanti and Duncan Gray.

The Femi Kuti remix dates from 2009, but got a fresh release in 2013 on 10" vinyl, courtesy of the Magic Feet label. Ewan Pearson also turns in a gorgeous dub remix of Out Cold aka Simon Aldred aka Cherry Ghost.

Things wrap up suitably with an exclusive remix of The Asphodells aka Andrew and Timothy J. Fairplay. Skwatch originally appeared on their debut album Ruled By Passion, Destroyed By Lust in 2012. Black Merlin's rework was a preview of the The Asphodells Remixed album which was released a couple of months after Andrew's mix for deathmetaldiscoclub.

This is one of many, many DJ mixes that I missed first time around, but I came to after Andrew Weatherall's untimely passing in 2020, thanks to The Flightpath Estate and their incredible WeatherDrive archive.

Keeping the dream alive, news came out this week that the follow up to last year's Sounds From The Flightpath Estate will arrive at the end of August.

Volume Two includes an exclusive remix of The Sabres of Paradise, plus contributions from Dicky Continental, Unit 14, Richard Fearless, David Harrow, Red Snapper, A Certain Ratio vs. Number, Bedford Falls Players and Sleaford Mods covering Two Lone Swordsmen. You can listen to a 25-minute promo mix by Rude Audio over at The Flightpath Estate Mixcloud site. Bloody hell!

I was completely floored by Volume One and I know that Volume Two will have a similar effect. There may be tears.

Limited to 1,500 copies on double vinyl, in a gatefold sleeve, Sounds From The Flightpath Estate Volume Two is available for pre-order. now. I got in quick; I'd strongly recommend you do the same.

Yeah, I'm Lying

I was listening again to Fisherman's Woman, the spine-tingling 2005 album by Emilíana Torrini, and my original intention was to randomly post At Least It Was, as it's impossible to have just one favourite song from the album.

Then I found a live performance from the 2005 Montreux Jazz Festival, which was even better than the studio version.

Then I discovered that the entire set was available on YouTube. You really need to see this.

1) Today Has Been OK
2) Snow
3) Lifesaver
4) Intro to Honeymoon Child
5) Honeymoon Child
6) Intro to Sunny Road
7) Sunny Road
8) Tuna Fish
9) At Least It Was
10) Nothing Brings Me Down
11) Intro to Heartstopper
12) Heartstopper
13) Next Time Around
14) Fisherman's Woman
15) Summerbreeze
16) Intro to Unemployed In Summertime
17) Unemployed In Summertime
18) Serenade

Then I remembered that Emilíana Torrini returned in March this year with a rather wonderful new album with The Colorist Orchestra called Racing The Storm.

Then I was reminded just how brilliant Emilíana Torrini really is.

Then I thought that Swiss Adam (Bagging Area) might also like to hear this again.

Then it occurred to me that I should also give thanks to C (Sun Dried Sparrows), who delivered a superb Imaginary Compilation Album to The Vinyl Villain way back in 2017.

Then I realised that Friday had turned into Saturday and I really should go to bed.

Acoustic Tent

I've been catching up with the BBC's Glastonbury coverage on iPlayer this week: Róisín Murphy, Yves Tumor, Saint Etienne, Confidence Man, Bicep... the list goes on. I feel the need to calm things down a bit for Sunday so here's 45 minutes of acoustic loveliness for your aural pleasure.

Paul Weller gets things off to an atypically rousing start with a bit of effing and jeffing, but it's generally family friendly language from there on. Charlotte Hatherley pops up twice, once as a solo artist and again near the end with former bandmates Ash. Patrick Duff delivers a beautiful version of Moon River from Breakfast At Tiffany's and the selection closes with someone you might not expect.

Yep, you guessed it: 11 songs with Wednesday in the title. This selection includes much loved songs by The Undertones, Elvis Costello & The Attractions and The Woodentops, an instrumental from Pete Shelley & Howard Devoto (was it really nearly 20 years ago?!) and a song from The Psychedelic Furs' spectacular comeback album last year.

A tip of the hat to Flimflamfan and Strangeways for introducing me to The Hardy Boys and The Siddeleys respectively via two excellent Imaginary Compilation Albums over at The Vinyl Villain. There's another brilliant ICA courtesy of Martin, the Swedish Correspondent, up this morning.
