Discollision!

Inspired by JC's disco diversion over at The Vinyl Villain yesterday, this is a You Tube recreation of a CD-R, compiled for my friend Kate in February 2006. Genuinely contains some of my favourite and most played songs.

I should note that Loleatta Holloway was uncredited for her (epic) vocal performance on Relight For Fire. Similarly, Lene Lovich wasn't credited for writing the lyrics for Cerrone's Supernature but did her own version in 1987 for the Animal Liberation compilation.

Wise Up, Show 'Em What You've Got

A very roundabout trip to get to this post today. The Vinyl Villain's post on The Chesterfields yesterday featured Ask Johnny Dee, which was one of my favourite songs on the Indie Top 20 CD88 compilation, another being There Is No Love Between Us Anymore (12" Version) by Pop Will Eat Itself, which then linked on You Tube to Wise Up! Sucker. Frontman Clint Mansell has gone on to become an award-winning film composer. Not quite six degrees of separation, but you get my drift.

Born To Entertain

You'll start to notice a few recurring artists on this blog, Julian Cope being one of them. I did An Imaginary Compilation for the Arch Drude over at The Vinyl Villain back in October 2020, where I made plain my unconditional love for Julian Cope's music, taking in The Teardrop Explodes, Brain Donor, Queen Elizabeth, Black Sheep and many, many, many solo albums. Julian Cope has also been the artist that I've seen most live in concert and holds the distinction of being the last gig I went to (fact fans: Sat 08 Feb 2020 at the Barbican in London) before the country went into lockdown.

The ICA that I did for The Vinyl Villain was a slight divergence from the norm, in that I focused exclusively on Julian Cope's live performances. You can read the track-by-track commentary in the TVV posting, but as the audio links are now dead I'm re-presenting the "album" here for your listening pleasure.

Shout To The Top

This came out earlier this month, but it was put on my radar by the ever brilliant The Vinyl Villian music blog. JC's post highlights Hifi Sean, perhaps better known by people of a certain age and musical persuastion as Sean Dickson, lead singer with The Soup Dragons. This time around, he's completely rebuilt and remixed a cover version of The Style Council 80s classic, originally released by Fire Island in 1998 and featuring disco diva Loleatta Holloway (also infamous for the belting sample that drove 1989's Ride On Time by Black Box).

When you've got Paul Weller, Pete Heller & Terry Farley (Boy's Own), Loleatta Holloway and Hifi Sean in the mix, you really can't go wrong. There are three Hifi Sean mixes, all on YouTube and all worth a listen to brighten up your day.

I'd highly recommend checking out Hifi Sean's other music too, especially his 2016 album Ft., which is truly brilliant. Big thanks to JC @ The Vinyl Villian for opening my ears.
