A saucy Saturday selection sourced from Swiss-based duo In Flagranti, with a smattering of smut over sixty minutes.

Try saying that three times with a mouthful of muesli.

I first heard the Sasha Crnobrnja and Alex Gloor's early excursions as In Flagranti around 2002, on a giveaway CD with the excellent Jockey Slut magazine. Further explorations of the internet revealed a plethora of remixes and, over time, I have quietly amassed a modest selection of their music and mixes.

Today's selection focuses on the decade from 2008 to 2018, mostly their reworkings of other artists, but with a couple of their own from 2013's Headrush EP, simply because I liked the song titles (!) 

A broad range of (sub)genres here. although all designed to make you move. I like the fact that there's a distinct In Flagranti feel without pinning themselves down to a particular motif or recurring theme.

Temples Of Day-Glo

If you're looking for thrilling psychedelic pop, Kettering in Northamptonshire would not necessarily be your obvious starting point, which would be your loss, as here was born Temples.

They're back with their fifth album, Bliss, and as a taster a bright looking (and sounding) single called Jet Stream Heart.

I first came across them via a remix of their debut single Shelter Song by Beyond The Wizards Sleeve aka Richard Norris and Erol Alkan who, as it turned out, had remixed their entire debut album Sun Structures as Sun Restructured. Both are wonderful.

If you're new to Temples, I've compiled a little visual tour through their back catalogue, which does beggar the question why their music isn't being played loud in every household. I'd be asking my neighbours to turn it up, not down!

You can pre-order Bliss from your friendly local record shop or the usual outlets. I'd also recommended placing a bookmark on their Bandcamp page to snap up Sun Restructured and other back catalogue goodies on Friday 1st May.

A Conversation With That Little Devil On Your Shoulder

Iraina Mancini returned with a single and video, Running For Your Life, at the beginning of February and it's another gorgeous slice of dramatic pop, with lush cinematic production and sumptuous vocals.

I was introduced to Iraina's music pretty much this time last year via a couple of remixes of songs from her debut album, Undo The Blue. The title track was reanimated by Beyond The Wizards Sleeve aka Erol Alkan and Richard Norris, whilst Sugar High had been remixed in 2023 by Saint Etienne. 

With artists like that involved, you expect top quality but even so, both remixes are superb.

  

Which inevitably lead back to Undo The Blue the album, issued on Pete Paphides' rather wonderful Needle Mythology label. Ten songs brimming with confidence, poise and hooks, to the extent that you'd be forgiven for thinking that this is Iraina's second or third album. No first release nerves here, this is an accomplished and satisfying debut.

Continuing my love of French music with the spotlight back on one of yesterday's featured artists, Daft Punk. 

 

I posted the first Dubhed selection dedicated to Guy Manuel De Homen-Cristo and Thomas Bangalter way, way back in February 2022. I confessed then that "I don't own a single Daft Punk album - and I probably need to do something about that". Suffice to say, I've since taken care of business. 

I've stuck with roughly the same rules as before: keeping the selection to just under an hour, twelve rather than ten songs this time around, A greater focus on album versions this time around too, though the occasional remix has slipped in. 

What an incredible body of work this pair produced before calling it a day. When I saw Nile Rodgers & Chic in concert the other week, Nile admitted that he didn't understand why they'd stepped away just as Daft Punk was enjoying it's greatest success and in his view had so much more great music to give. 

I think they did exactly what they needed to do and their legacy will continue to speak for itself.

Dip Your Hip

I have been a huge fan of Justin Robertson's work since I first heard his remixes at the start of the 1990s, continuing with his own material as Lionrock and various other guises throughout the decade and beyond.

The multi-tasking Justin has successfully worked as a DJ, music producer, painter, author and broadcaster for the past 30 years. Does this man sleep?! Clearly not judging by his musical output alone, a ton of which - new and unearthed from the vaults - has been released to the world via Bandcamp since June this year.

Today's selection dips into Justin's 21st Century output, from 2001's 'lost' classic album as Revtone to remixes for Noel Gallagher, Temples, Justice and The Whip and his continuing remixes as releases as Justin Robertson's Deadstock 33s.

 

There's so much to choose from that I struggled to keep it under an hour and a half, but I'm happy with the final selection and I hope you are too.

 

The post title is lifted from a sample used on the track Velocity Falls, a 1980s nugget, written by Chas Jankel and Ian Dury.

Clarity

Just over a month since wishing Richard Norris a happy birthday and hinting at a follow-up selection, here it is, all fifty seven and a half minutes of loveliness for a Sunday.

 

The forecast was for nothing but rain but instead the sun is streaming through the windows, with clear blue skies as far as I can see, a reminder that summer is still here.

 

Today's selection spans an incredible 35 years, from Richard's early sonic experiments with Genesis P-Orridge/Psychic TV resulting in the seminal Jack The Tab album, founding The Grid with Dave Ball and Beyond The Wizard's Sleeve with Erol Alkan, further experiments with The Time & Space Machine and currently, a prolific output in his own name, not least the Music For Healing longform series and Oracle Sound dub excursions. 

 

I am in awe.

 

It's been a year of tough choices and occasionally poor decisions, but one of my best was to take up a subscription to the Inner Mind members' club via Bandcamp. I enthused about it last time and I'd recommend it to anyone who has enjoyed this selection, particularly the opening and closing brace of tracks. It really is money well spent. Thanks, Richard!

How Do We Start?

I had a couple of lovely comments on yesterday's post from Stevie (Charity Chic) and Brian (Linear Tracking Lives). At some point in the future, there will be a post that does Joe Strummer more justice than a 10-second snippet in reverse, but today's is inspired by Brian's comment that he was looking forward to seeing and hearing what else I had up my sleeve. Well, there was only one to go with that and it is of course Beyond The Wizards Sleeve, a collaboration between Erol Alkan and Richard Norris, both much loved here at Studio K.
