Somerset Sider

History reinvented with Friday's slightly shaken selection, courtesy of Johnson Somerset.

I first discovered his work in 2016 via Paper Romance by Groove Armada (included here) and an entire album's worth of Duran Duran overhauls called Eiffel Tower.

Here's six crowd pleasers from a back catalogue that now runs into the hundreds, and continues to be added to YouTube on a regular basis.

1) Dance Hall Days (Johnson Somerset Remix): Wang Chung (2023)
2) Notorious (Johnson Somerset Remix): Duran Duran (2025)
3) Paper Romance (Johnson Somerset Remix): Groove Armada ft. Fenech-Soler & SaintSaviour (2013)
4) Summertime Sadness (Johnson Somerset Remix): Lana Del Rey (2020)
5) Self Control (Johnson Somerset Remix): Laura Branigan (2023)
6) The In Crowd (West End Wolf Remix): Bryan Ferry (2013)

Everything Is Fine

Celebrating David Lynch, born 20th January 1946, whose death was announced on Thursday, days before what would have been his 79th birthday.

This wasn't the Friday post I originally had in mind, and is a hastily cobbled together selection of a dozen of David Lynch songs, remixes (of and by), cover versions and mash-ups.

The collection starts and ends in possibly predictable fashion, Pixies' cover of In Heaven (Lady In The Radiator Song) in 1988 making as much of an impression on my teenage mind as the opening minutes of Lynch's 1987 film Blue Velvet.

And yes, I know it's a cheat including Lana Del Rey's version over Bobby Vinton's cover, which was the inspiration for the film, but the latter makes a cheeky appearance in Voicedude's contribution to the intriguing (and sadly no longer available) 2008 compilation Mashed In Plastic: The David Lynch Mash-Up Album.

I got to see nearly all of David Lynch's films on the big screen, including a re-release of Eraserhead in the early 1990s, and with the exception of Dune (1984) and Inland Empire (2006). And on the small screen, I was left with an agonising wait to complete the Twin Peaks experience, as I headed off to Australia for a year after Season 1's cliffhanger ending on BBC2.

Who I'm Meant To Be

As a tenuous link to that big thing happening this weekend, here's one of tonight's headline acts, Lana Del Rey

Whatever your opinion of Lana aka Elizabeth Woolridge Grant, there's no denying that she is prolific on an old-school level. Her breakthrough came with Video Games in 2011 and album Born To Die in 2012; actually her second, third if you count the unreleased album From The End from 2005. Lana's ninth album, Did You Know That There's a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd, was released in March 2023. She's also found time to collaborate with other artists, drop mixtapes and release a further spoken word album, 2020's Violet Bent Backwards Over The Grass.

I've given it a good go, but I can't keep up with the rate of album releases. Aside from her latest, I'm still missing the brilliantly-titled Norman Fucking Rockwell! from 2019. I admire Lana Del Rey as an artist; some of her songs don't always work for me but the hit rate is astonishingly high.

The dozen selected here aren't the hits or even an attempt at a "best of"; as usual, I've just followed my instinct and let the songs find themselves. I've included some earlier, pre-Video Games songs and demos, which were leaked in the early 2010s. Apart from being good songs, they're stylistically different but hint at the cinematic sweep of the words and music to come.

The subsequent material shows Lana shrugging off the labels, stereotypes and preconceptions and pursuing her vision and honing her craft. And delivering some bloody good songs along the way.

Tonight should be epic, even if I am watching it on BBC iPlayer and not in a field of thousands, cheering my throat raw.

1) Pawn Shop Blues (2010)
2) Million Dollar Man (2012)
3) Thunder (2021)

10) Heroin (2017)

You Gotta Fight The Power

Dreadzone celebrate their 30th anniversary this year. Initially a duo of Greg Roberts (Big Audio Dynamite) and Tim Bran (who I knew of from his work with Julian Cope as Branno Of Gwernsey), Greg has remained the constant through three decades, along with former BAD bassist Leo Williams, who joined early on.

The Dreadzone collective has seen an impressive number of people over the years, some briefly, some for a longer journey: Earl Sixteen, Alison Goldfrapp, MC Spee as well as former BAD compadres Dan Donovan, Mick Jones and Don Letts. The current line up for the 30th anniversary live shows is Greg Roberts, Leo Williams, Earl Sixteen, Bazil aka James Bainbridge and Blake Roberts (Greg's son).

I saw Dreadzone at the Bristol Community Festival aka Ashton Court Festival in July 1995. Sadly, none of the dates on their recent "Part 1" tour were relatively nearby but I'd be tempted to see them if "Part 2" offers up some accessible locations.

A new album will be landing this year. In the meantime, here's an hour-long selection of Dreadzone tracks and remixes to whet your appetite.

Older and Dubwiser indeed.

1) Zion Youth (Dreadzone Mix): Dreadzone (1995)
2) Gangster (She Is Danger Remix By Lena Cullen & Maya Jane Coles): Dreadzone (2010)
3) Lookee Here (Dreadzone Remix): Transglobal Underground ft. Natacha Atlas & Heitham Al-Sayed (1994)
4) The Good The Bad And The Dread (The Bad) (Remix By Tim Bran): Dreadzone ft. Alison Goldfrapp (1993)
5) Video Games (Lana Dub Rey) (Dreadzone Remix): Lana Del Rey (2012)

7) Africa (Single Version): Dreadzone (1993)

The Tape Would Understand

Things started with The Clash, inevitably jumping to Manic Street Preachers and leading to whole bunch of 'radio' songs. But not including Radio Song by R.E.M. Although there is another 'radio' song by R.E.M. My brain hurts.

2) Radio G String: Bow Wow Wow (1980)

Monday’s Lindstrøm Song(s)

Hans-Peter Lindstrøm hails from Norway and has been releasing music for nearly 20 years. I first heard Lindstrøm and fellow Norwegian Thomas Moen Hermansen aka Prins Thomas via their epic remix of Tito's Way by The Juan MacLean in 2005 and I've been hooked ever since.

Lindstrøm & Prins Thomas also released their debut self-titled album in 2005, with Lindstrøm's first solo album, Where You Go I Go Too, emerging in 2008, the title track stretching to an absorbing 29 minutes. In addition to several more albums both solo and with Prins Thomas, Lindstrøm has been a prolific collaborator. Real Life Is No Cool, Lindstrøm's 2009 album with Isabelle Sandoo aka Christabelle is another personal favourite. Other albums and 12" singles have been released in partnership with Todd Rundgren and Emil Nikolaisen, Rune Lindbæk and Todd Terje.

Today's selection features a snapshot of Lindstrøm's work, with one exception between 2005 and 2013. In my early days of owning an iPod with a 4GB capacity, I used to make edits of long songs just to fit more music onto my playlist. So, to open, here's my chopped down version of Tito's Way, cutting the original 11-minute Lindstrøm & Prins Thomas remix to about half the length, Nancy Whang's vocals still front and centre.

There are a couple of tracks from Lindstrøm & Christabelle's album, plus a couple more Lindstrøm & Prins Thomas remixes, first up DJ Harvey's Locussolus project, followed by a contemporary rework of Roxy Music's Avalon to close proceedings.

I've also included Lindstrøm's remix of Blue Velvet, Lana Del Rey's version of the classic song originally recorded by Tony Bennett in 1951 and taken to #1 by Bobby Vinton in 1963. Completing the selection are a couple of solo Lindstrøm songs form opposite ends of the timeline, the original version of I Feel Space from 2005 together with Chris Massey's brilliant remix of Blinded By The LEDs from 2021. The latter is still available as a free download on Bandcamp, grab it while you can.

Lindstrøm has just completed a trio of DJ sets in the USA and - fingers crossed - will be back with new music imminently. In the meantime, this is just the antidote to the Monday morning drag of getting up in the dark and forcing a reluctant body and mind to get moving when all it wants to do is crawl back into bed. The cat will now doubt be bemused/horrified when I come to life and proceed to bounce around the kitchen.

1) Tito's Way (Lindstrøm & Prins Thomas Remix - Khayem's 'Lapta' Re-Edit): The Juan MacLean (2009)
2) Baby Can't Stop (Album Version): Lindstrøm & Christabelle (2009)
3) I Feel Space (Original Version): Lindstrøm (2005)
4) High & Low: Lindstrøm & Christabelle (2009)
5) Blue Velvet (Lindstrøm Remix) (Cover of Tony Bennett): Lana Del Rey (2013)
6) I Want It (Lindstrøm & Prins Thomas Remix): Locussolus (2011)
7) Blinded By The LEDs (Massey's Club Mix): Lindstrøm (2021)
8) Avalon (Lindstrøm & Prins Thomas Version): Roxy Music (2010)

2005: I Feel Space EP: 3
2009: Real Life Is No Cool: 2, 4
2009: Tito's Way EP (bootleg MP3): 1
2010: Remixes (Blue) EP: 8
2011: Locussolus: 6
2013: Blue Velvet EP: 5
2021: Blinded By The LEDs EP: 7

They Wouldn't Know Freedom If You Salted It And Rubbed It In Their Eyes

One of the inevitable effects of a steady flow of good new music, as well as back catalogue reissues and rediscoveries through the blogosphere, is that it's very easy for great songs to be lost in the avalanche. Songs that I enjoyed but only played once or twice before the continuing influx of music pushed them further and further into the past.

Today's selection therefore rescues songs from the dim and distant past of 2012 (!) and brings them into the light again. A mix of original songs and cover versions, it's hard to believe that these songs are a decade old. The Jazz Butcher provide today's post title; sadly Pat Fish departed this life in October 2021. Another loss - Mark Hollis in 2019 - is celebrated with an affecting Talk Talk cover version by Duncan Sheik & Rachael Yamagata.

I knew the closing song would be A Case For Vinyl by Tim Burgess before I'd had a proper sense of the selection's running order. A co-write with Lambchop's Kurt Wagner, I think it's one of Tim's finest songs, both solo and with The Charlatans.

No spoilers, but tomorrow's selection will be a little more uptempo.

1) Freedom At 21: Jack White (single / Blunderbuss LP)
2) Goodbye Kiss (Cover of Kasabian): Lana Del Rey (God Bless America mixtape)
3) Grasshopper Clock: The Corner Laughers (Poppy Seeds LP)
4) Do I Wait (Cover of Ryan Adams): Juliana Hatfield (Juliana Hatfield LP)
5) On Borrowed Time (Take 5) (Remix By BRM & Waterson): Billie Ray Martin (Five Takes (A Song About Andy) EP)
6) Last Of The Gentleman Adventurers: The Jazz Butcher (Last Of The Gentleman Adventurers LP)
7) Life's What You Make It (Cover of Talk Talk): Duncan Sheik ft. Rachael Yamagata (Spirit Of Talk Talk compilation)
8) Half Gate: Grizzly Bear (Shields LP)
9) Save Me A Place (Cover of Fleetwood Mac): Marissa Nadler (July / Demos & Covers limited edition LP)
10) A Case For Vinyl: Tim Burgess (single / Oh No I Love You LP)

Been Tryin' Hard Not To Get Into Trouble

Listening to 4 Hero's remix of Nuyorican Soul sidestepped me into Photek's remix of 4 Hero and so to today's selection. Rupert Parkes began releasing music under numerous aliases in the early 1990s, Photek emerging in 1994 and being the most enduring of these, still in use today. Part of the hideously named genre, intelligent drum and bass, like his contemporaries Roni Size, LTJ Bukem and Goldie, what really appealed to me was the complex rhythms and jazz inflections. As a nod to the latter, a track on Photek's debut album, KJZ, was an acronym for Kirk's Jazz. By the start of the 21st Century, Photek's sound had taken a turn into house and techno, though as this selection highlights, there is an identity and character linking all of Photek's music. I've lost track in the last few years, and I have read that Parkes has subsequently produced music for films, TV and games, his last album release being the soundtrack to EA Games' Need For Speed in 2016.

For this selection, I've focused solely on Photek's remixes for other artists. It's great to listen to these in one go, personal favourites being Loose by Therapy?, Destiny by Zero 7, I Miss You by Björk and the one that started this all, Star Chasers by 4 Hero. The remix of Paul Simon was a welcome return in 2018 and one of the few redeeming tracks on the otherwise questionable Graceland: The Remixes album. I hadn't heard Photek's remix of The Faint in 5 years and it struck how well it would sit in a mixtape next to songs from John Grant's latest album, Boy From Michigan, particularly The Rusty Bull or Your Portfolio. And how else to end but with Single by Everything But The Girl? The original version is sublime; Photek's remix provides a similar shiver down the spine. Twenty five years old and still sounding like it could be out right now.

1) The Lonely Night (Photek Remix): Moby ft. Mark Lanegan & Mindy Jones (2013)
2) Destiny (Photek Remix): Zero 7 ft. Sia & Sophie Barker (2001)
3) Alien (Photek Remix): Lamb (1999)
4) Total Job (Remixed By Photek): The Faint (2003)
5) Loose (Photek Remix): Therapy? (1995)
6) Ride (Photek B21 Edit): Lana Del Rey (2012)
7) Lie Down In Darkness (Photek Remix): Moby (2011)
8) All Around The World Or The Myth Of Fingerprints (Photek Remix): Paul Simon (2018)
9) I Miss You (Photek Mix): Björk (1996)
10) Star Chasers (Photek Remix): 4 Hero (1998)
11) Single (Photek Remix): Everything But The Girl (1996)

Slip Into Something More Comfortable...

June 2015 mix, re-posted on my Mixcloud page in 2020, which includes the Hannes Fischer remix of Summertime Sadness that I mentioned in Sunday's post. Starting with Christopher Guest as Spinal Tap's Nigel Tufnell and finishing with John Thaw as The Sweeney's Jack Regan, and slipping in a few of my amateur edits along the way. Simplesmente is a simple splice of two Tom Middleton mixes. I like the Edie Sedgwick/Nightmares On Wax mash-up and I think the Shift K3y/Lana Del Rey segue works well although in retrospect I maybe should have extended the intro of the latter. And, of course, any excuse to shoehorn in a Julian Cope song...

7) “Let’s face it Roger, that dress is you”: Zero Mostel, Gene Wilder & Christopher Hewett (1967)
8) Get Lucky (Live Medley @ MTV Awards):
Daft Punk ft. Pharrell Williams, Nile Rodgers & Stevie Wonder (2014)

Down The Rabbit Hole

I had something completely different in mind for today's post, but after listening to John Grant's new album this morning (one for another post), my playlist shuffled to Hannes Fischer's spectacular remix of Summertime Sadness by Lana Del Rey, which I love. I then found myself down the proverbial rabbit hole, seeking out more of Fischer's remixes, of which there are many and far more than Discogs has been able to keep up with.

I know very little about Hannes Fischer, other than he is Berlin-based, has released a handful of singles (including a collaboration with Robosonic back in March) and has a trademark bubbling club sound that also seems to perfectly soundtrack a wet Sunday morning, with headphones and a hot drink.

There is no finesse in this sequenced sampler and I'm still getting my ears around the suitcase-full of mixes I've discovered but if you like these, you'll pretty much like everything else he's done.

1) Rock The Boat (Hannes Fischer Remix): Aaliyah (2017)
2) 93 Til Infinity (Hannes Fischer Remix): Souls Of Mischief (2015)
3) Curling (Hannes Fischer Remix): Ex-Mono & Jan 10ner (2021)
