Everything Is Fine

Celebrating David Lynch, born 20th January 1946, whose death was announced on Thursday, days before what would have been his 79th birthday.

This wasn't the Friday post I originally had in mind, and is a hastily cobbled together selection of a dozen of David Lynch songs, remixes (of and by), cover versions and mash-ups.

The collection starts and ends in possibly predictable fashion, Pixies' cover of In Heaven (Lady In The Radiator Song) in 1988 making as much of an impression on my teenage mind as the opening minutes of Lynch's 1987 film Blue Velvet.

And yes, I know it's a cheat including Lana Del Rey's version over Bobby Vinton's cover, which was the inspiration for the film, but the latter makes a cheeky appearance in Voicedude's contribution to the intriguing (and sadly no longer available) 2008 compilation Mashed In Plastic: The David Lynch Mash-Up Album.

I got to see nearly all of David Lynch's films on the big screen, including a re-release of Eraserhead in the early 1990s, and with the exception of Dune (1984) and Inland Empire (2006). And on the small screen, I was left with an agonising wait to complete the Twin Peaks experience, as I headed off to Australia for a year after Season 1's cliffhanger ending on BBC2.

  1. This one hit me harder than most.

Well done on putting that together so quickly, K. My own list will follow on Monday, featuring an (almost) entirely different set of tunes.

    1. Yes, and even more tragic as accounts of David's last hours emerge.

Thanks for your superb post at My Top Ten yesterday, David's 79th birthday. An excellent selection of music.

A nod also to Swiss Adam's tribute at Bagging Area.

  2. Great selection to honor his legacy. He had quite the career and his musical endeavors are just as powerful as his films.

    1. Thanks, Mooz. And I didn't even mention his music videos, works of art in their own right. Case in point: https://youtu.be/Q7zQlsLgYhg?si=aTTs8ri6xhImf4oi

  3. Still think Twin Peaks original series 1 and 2 were two of the scariest things I watched on TV...

    1. An especially agonising wait for series 2 in my case, as I was in Australia when it aired in the UK and was travelling around the country when they eventually 'caught up', so it was many, many years later when I finally got to watch it on DVD.

  4. If I'm not mistaken, you can download all the songs from "Mashed in Plastic" from the Internet Archive. I don't know if that's legal though. [sk]

    1. Thanks for the tip [sk]! The mash-ups were unofficial and liberally borrowed from other robustly litigious artists, so I think it's fair to say that they were never legal. If I remember correctly from the original Mashed In Plastic website, David Lynch allegedly heard some, possibly all, of them and gave the project his thumbs up. But I don't believe everything I read on the internet...!

  5. what a great loss! David Lynch has left such a big footprint in my life, even though things have quietened down in recent years. all the fantastic films with their wonderful music. Twin Peaks was the pinnacle for me and will always be, even with the fantastic sequel 25 years later. this was so much more than simple entertainment. endless thoughts that revolved around this series and how annoying I was to my friends back then. I've also always liked Adamski's version of "In Heaven, everything is fine". I still enjoy listening to it to this day. R.I.P. great master . Greetings Alex/BTG

    1. Many thanks, Adam. In Heaven seems to resonate with so many artists, doesn't it? Pixies was the first - and definitive - cover version for me, but I've heard many more since, all worth checking out. I wasn't aware that Adamski had a go at it, though - I will check it out!

  6. Thanks for the link, Alex, and sorry for misnaming you in my previous reply, I clearly had Adamski on my brain!

    1. Ironically, my brother had this CD back in the day, so I can only assume that I never managed to get more than halfway through listening to it… :-(
