Out Of The Frying Pan, Into The Fire

Beck to the rescue, as I've been unable to complete my planned post for today. If I can get my shit together, it will mean a double post for Sunday, which is a win-win, right?

Run Away appears on Beck's latest album Ride Lonesome and was released as a single on Friday. I'm aware that it's not the first single or video to come out, but it's the first that I've heard.

If Run Away is indicative of Ride Lonesome as a whole, then we're revisiting contemplative/wistful/acoustic-and-strings Beck, which is no bad thing. I've never become obsessive about any particular Beck album or phase, but I like the fact that he moves around from time to time, sometimes breaking new ground, sometimes returning to and embellishing his previous narratives.

Run Away might not be the most memorable song in the Beck catalogue, but it's a pleasant listen. If John Lewis picked this for their Christmas TV ad campaign, it wouldn't sound out of place, but would make a welcome change from the downtempo cover versions that are often the go-to picks.

As this played out on YT, here are some of the other fresh picks from the past week or so that were stuck in the sidebar, trying to attract my attention.

That was Matt Berninger with Ask For Water, from the Type It Up EP. I know there's a lot of love for The National, including in this corner of the blogosphere, but I'm largely ignorant of their music. A quick check and I have the Cherry Tree EP from 2004, and a bunch of random songs, which suggests that the majority of these have come from music magazine cover mounted CDs.

I have one Matt Berninger song in my collection - My Eyes Are T-Shirts - with the album listed as "The National: Uncut 2023", so this is definitely from a freebie CD. Ask For Water is considerably more uptempo and rockier than the latter, but I can't really tell you how much of a departure this is from Matt's day job. Good song, though.

I haven't listened to new Ash music in ages, so I was looking forward to listening to their latest release, Bittersweet Blue. Whilst Tim, Mark and Rick now look like a trio of guys in their late forties, the song sounded like the band that I first heard in the late 1990s.

Then I read the small print and realised that Bittersweet Blue was written and recorded in 1996 but didn't make the cut for debut album 1977. Well, kind of.

In fact, all that made it to tape was "a usable drum take, bass, some rhythm guitars, a scratch vocal and not much else. Not even lyrics."

So, arguably Bittersweet Blue is a new song, it just took 30 years to finish writing and recording it. Well worth the wait, if you ask me.

Did you like Lykke Li? Or were you sick of Sick Of Love? I'm firmly in the former camp, a big fan of Lykke and glad that she's back. This is the Mura Masa remix of the track and whilst it sounds like it could have come out at any point in the last 25 years, it presses all the right buttons for me. I found the video exhausting, though. I hope they reached their destination on time.

The hipsters out there will already know that ohayoumadayarou (おはようまだやろう) is the solo music project of MC Rachel (渡賀レイチェル) from the Japanese rap duo chelmico.

The single mo osoi was created in collaboration with producer Esme Mori (エズミ・モリ). Sadly, no official website or Bandcamp presence that I can see, so I am going to have to dip into Apple Music to buy this one.

YT was also trying to persuade me to share Midge Ure's newly recorded cover of Fade To Grey, the song he co-wrote for Visage and a cornerstone of the New Romantic movement.

After my initial reaction of "Why?", i had a listen but didn't make it past the first chorus. I'll leave it for you decide if you want to try it. Apparently, this is from a forthcoming compilation of Midge's 80s catalogue, called Chapters.

Disc 2 of the 3CD version has piqued my curiosity, as it comprises reworks and remixes by 'connected' artists, including Richard Barbieri, Steve Jansen, Craig Armstrong, Blank & Jones and Wolfgang Flür. Now, if these tracks are available individually, I'd be more interested...

Tonight, The Afterparty

A random shuffle brought up Tonight by Lykke Li, from 2008's Youth Novels, and a welcome reminder that I should listen to the album again.

What I'd missed/forgotten was that Lykke's sixth album, The Afterparty, is coming on 8th May. At the weekend, a couple of videos/singles were posted in advance, Lucky Again and Knife In The Heart.

When I say videos, they look more like TikTok clips, looped to match the respective songs duration. Even so, a compelling watch and listen.

Compared to Tonight, both are uptempo, poppier affairs although even causal attention to the vocals reveals the darker lyrical narrative that Lykke writes so well.

Welcome back, Lykke.

You can order The Afterparty from most of the usual places, including Lykke's official website.

A Song Has To Change To Stay Alive

I've been sitting on the Covers EP* by Lykke Li since it came out on 13th June, as it wasn't quite the right time to post about it.

However, following Ernie's musings yesterday on the purchase of a Swedish Pop Music CD in a charity shop, and Swiss Adam's comment that he likes Lykke Li a lot (me too, Adam, me too), that time is now!

The Covers EP features Lykke's singular takes on songs by Ben E. King, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and The Everly Brothers. Into My Arms seems to be the one getting all the attention in promoland, but they're all hauntingly wonderful, as you might expect from Ms. Li.

Of course, Lykke's got plenty of form in this regard so, in case you haven't heard them previously, I've added five more cover versions that she's released into the world in the last decade and a half.

And, another prime example that every day is a learning day, I've only just discovered that Ring Of Fire by Johnny Cash was itself a cover version. I knew that Johnny's wife June Carter co-wrote the song with Merle Kilgore, but not that it was first recorded by June's younger sister, Anita Carter. You can listen to the original here.

1) Stand By Me (Cover of Ben E. King) (2025)
2) Into My Arms (Cover of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds) (2025)
3) Love Hurts (Cover of The Everly Brothers) (2025)
4) Ring Of Fire (Cover of 'Love's Ring Of Fire' by Anita Carter) (2024)
5) I WIll Survive (Cover of Gloria Gaynor) (2020)
6) Unchained Melody (Cover of The Righteous Brothers) (2017)
7) Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow? (Cover of The Shirelles) (2009)
8) Knocked Up (Cover of Kings Of Leon) (2009)

* not literally, it's digital!

And to prove that Lykke Li is a formidable songwriter in her own right, I've reposted a link to the 48-minute Dubhed selection that I created in November 2021.

Forget About My Tainted Heart

From Norway yesterday to Sweden today and the brilliant Lykke Li. It was her megahit Little Bit and debut album Youth Novels that first drew me, but she has gone from strength to strength since. Lykke Li's last album was in 2018, but earlier this year the 10th anniversary edition of 2nd album Wounded Rhymes was released and in October, a new song Bron emerged, hopefully presaging a new album in 2022.

For today's selection, I randomly settled on the setlist for Lykke Li's performance at Lollapalooza in 2014. I wasn't there, and it is heavy with songs from her then-current 3rd album, I Never Learn, but it's as good a selection as any. I've mixed it up a bit by dropping in remixes and acoustic versions of several tracks.

As a bonus, I've included a link to the full Lollapalooza performance on YouTube. A fan has taken a previously out of synch video and re-sequenced it, so every now and then it jumps a bit. Finally, I've included a 2017 performance of I Follow Rivers, featuring Kelsey Lu (a favourite on this blog) and Nancy Whang, perhaps best known for her work with The Juan Maclean and LCD Soundsystem.

1) I Never Learn (Album Version) (2014)
2) Sadness Is A Blessing (Gold Panda Remix) (2011)
3) Just Like A Dream (2014)

10) I Follow Rivers (Dave Sitek Remix) (2011)
11) Youth Knows No Pain (Acoustic Version) (2011)

Der Trommelschlag Knackt Im Takt

A random selection for Friday, the only connection being that I haven't listened to any of these songs in far too long. The title is a German translation of 'the drum beat cracks in time', a line from The Anvil by Visage, although in the German version of the song the line becomes 'magisch schlagen die trommel' which translates into English as 'beat the drum magically'.

1) Inner City Life (Rabbit In The Moon's Return To Vocalic City): Goldie ft. Diane Charlemagne (1996)
2) Shining Bright Star (Zongamin Remix): Black Strobe (2007)
3) Kowalski (Automator Mix): Primal Scream (1997)
4) Runark (Jokers Of The Scene Remix): Congorock (2009)
5) Aqualung (Dub): Spooky (1994)
6) Der Amboss (Vocal) (Remix By Visage & John Luongo): Visage (1982)
7) Little Bit (Loving Hand Remix By Tim Goldsworthy): Lykke Li (2008)
8) Laugh (Vox-Reverse Tele) (Remix By DJ Vadim): Low (1998)
9) Teardrop (Scream Team Remix): Massive Attack ft. Elizabeth Fraser (1998)
10) Fast Forward The Future (Buckets & Bongs Mixture By The Orb) (Album Edit): Zodiac Youth (1991)
