I love reggae and dub and I love cover versions and it's been a while since I've posted either, so I've mashed them up in one (nearly) hour-long selection.
A 15-track compendium, mostly 21st Century, but with a clutch of 1970s classics thrown in for good measure. I couldn't decide between two Nicky Thomas covers so they both went in!
Nicky's in good company: Rhoda Dakar, 15 16 17, Hollie Cook, Brown Sugar, Xan Tyler, Earl 16, Dr. Israel, LSK, Peter Tosh, Suggs, Little Roy, Prince Fatty, Mad Professor and Adrian Sherwood.
Proof of concept, if needed, that every song should have a mandatory reggae version.

2) Brain Damage (Cover of Pink Floyd): Easy Star All-Stars ft. Dr. Israel (2003)

ReplyDeleteThanks, Walter, it's been on rotation at Casa K all week!
DeleteListening to it now, excellent, thanks!
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed it, and thanks for your great work over at Jokonky!
DeleteMandatory Reggae Version? It will never catch on
ReplyDeleteAhem, I hope you will forgive this trademark transgression, Mr. Goggins, and not send the heavies round to Casa K to "sort me out"?
DeleteMany thanks for this selection ! One question : WTF is this Space Oddity version by Adrian Sherwood ? I Never heard about it before ! As a big On-U Sound fan, I'd like to have more informations about it... Thanks again !
ReplyDeleteThanks, AdJeee, it's great, isn't it? It was part of an hour long mix that Adrian did at The Boiler Room in 2012. You can find the whole thing on YouTube at https://youtu.be/OwQcvL5COwc?si=Xw-XHTJNWiPmMmyi and this particular snippet kicks in around 6:58
DeleteThere are lots of bootlegs available of the isolated extract on YT & beyond. I think the title is a bit of a red herring as it's really an LSK track, rather than a straight cover version. It's sometimes titled Mind Control To Make You Dumb, after the opening line.
Lots of online comments suggest that it was intended for a proper release, but I've never seen of heard another version outside of Sherwood's mix.
reggae cover of Megadeth anyone? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7QaKxfa2kI
ReplyDeleteYes, please! And you've just sent me down a rabbit hole, discovering Andy Rehfeldt's Variety Show on YT...
DeleteKhayem Old Sausage - this is a blinder. Many thanks for some real ripsnorters - you've cheered me up no end!
ReplyDeleteI'm very pleased to have brought some dub-infused cheer to you, Hal! I hope you enjoyed the Horace Andy selection too.
