I rediscovered this little beauty in a box of CD singles in the attic, Australian trio Gerling and their 1999 single Enter Spacecapsule.
I remember seeing this in the secondhand racks at Replay in Bristol and taking a punt, without having heard the song or knowing anything about Gerling.
Ironically, the UK CD format of the single contains the fewest remixes of the title: aside from the Radio Disko Remix, there's just one more by Hedrock Valley Rocks; there's a second remix by HVB out there, as well as remixes by Josh Abrahams and Avalanches.
It's a fun few minutes and a dip into Gerling's other singles is equally entertaining. According to Discogs, Gerling formed in 1993 and the bulk of their musical output - including r albums - appears to have been between 1998 and 2006.
Former member Darren Cross seems to have been particularly active as a solo artist in subsequent years, including 2021's Distorder, which "nods its head to his old band", and "instrumental guitar escapist music" as D.C. Cross. The third D.C. Cross album, Hot-Wire The Lay-Low (Australian Escapist Pieces For Guitar), was released in February 2022 and it's an intriguing, contemplative listen.
In the press release, Cross says that, "if I like I can go stay in $35 a night motels in Lithgow N.S.W, armed
with only a guitar and some free instant coffee, look out the window at
the mountains, dreary rain and snow and write music inspired by the
moment and environment, tuning in to old histories and vibrations,
literally escaping."
From outer space to the Australia's Great Western Highway, it's quite a ride.
