Dub '83

Body popping sure means something different to me now than it did forty years.

Not that I was in any way inclined to bust a move when I saw a group of people, a boom box and a sheet of cardboard back in the day. These days, body popping is more likely the sound made by an unforgiving joint when I try to lift or reach for something. Bust a move? Bust a hip, more like.

Still, I can imagine. Here's ten songs from 1983 given the dub treatment by the likes of John 'Jellybean' Benitez, François Kevorkian, Arthur Baker, John Luongo, Martin Rushent and John Robie.

A Sunday quiz for you (in no way *cough* ripping off someone else's far better executed idea):

1) Which song featured in it's original form in the hit film Flashdance?
2) Which song was co-written with Sting?
3) Which 4AD act and song sampled Din Daa Daa by George Kranz to great effect in 1987?
4) Which act featured the namesake of this legendary English actor?
5) What do German electropop act Boytronic and English girl group Sugababes have in common?

Answers will be posted in the comments later today.

* KrakenFiles is still being a pain in the arse. I'm currently unable to upload new files or access my previous files. So, it's Mega only today. If the KF issues persist, I will be trying (yet another) provider. Apologies!

  1. Q1 is Maniac. I'll need a coffee before I tackle the rest

    1. It took me two strong coffees to come up with the questions, Ernie! I don't know how Rol does it every week!

    1. Many thanks, Walter, and a cracking start! A bonus point for Q2, but Sting also co-wrote one of the songs in today's selection. Possibly not the one you might think.

    2. Sting co-wrote Riders On The Storm? Or was it Din Doo Doo Doo, Din Daa Daa Daa?

  4. Thanks for joining in and your patience, here are the answers to today’s quiz:

    1) The original version of Maniac appeared in the film Flashdance. Ernie got in early!
    2) Sting co-wrote Adventures In Success with Will Powers aka photographer Lynn Goldsmith. A single from the album Dancing For Mental Health, which also featured Steve Winwood, Todd Rundgren, Carly Simon, Jacob Brackman, Nile Rodgers and Tom Bailey.
    3) Pump Up The Volume by M/A/R/R/S was a UK #1 for 4AD in 1987 and sampled, among many others, Din Daa Daa by George Kranz. Thanks, Walter!
    4) Mooz was right on the money. Wuf Ticket was a US hip hop rap act that included James Mason in their ranks. If only it had been the legendary English actor, that would have been some USP!
    5) Both Boytronic and Sugababes’ name/brand was initially owned by their respective record labels. At different points in their history, label management replaced the line up so that none of the founding members featured in the band.

    Thanks again!
