Happy birthday Phil Thornalley, born 5th January 1960.
Phil's had an interesting career, to say the least. He started out as a recording engineer aged 18, working with the likes of Steve Lillywhite, Alex Sadkin and Mickie Most. In 1982, Phil produced Pornography, the fourth album by The Cure, subsequently joining the band when Simon Gallup left (the first time). That's Phil's double bass on The Love Cats.
During the 1980s and 1990s, Phil joined Johnny Hates Jazz as lead singer following the departure of founding member Clark Datchler. Oh, and he also co-wrote a song called Torn which became a rather big hit when covered by Natalie Imbruglia in 1997.
I'll confess that I haven't followed Phil's career into the 21st Century, but a a flick through my music collection highlights how many beloved artists he has produced, co-produced, remixed or performed with. This then is a 12-song selection that put a big grin on my face and got me turning up that dial.
Have a good one, Phil!

ReplyDeleteI can give his production work with Pixie Lott, Brian McFadden and Ronan Keating a miss to be honest, but Phil also produced some of Zeke Manyika's early solo releases which I need to check out.
DeleteI've a couple of Zeke's records.A bit like the curate's egg - good in parts!
ReplyDeleteThanks, CC! I've got the Bible Belt and Runaway Freedom Train 12" singles and then the Mastercrime album, which I like, but I still haven't heard the debut album and singles that came before. I've also got a few of Zeke's collaborations with Faze Action, which I like a lot. Curate's egg? Sounds like a good title for a Zeke selection if I get around to one ;-)
DeleteA name I've seen credited on quite a number of singles/albums sitting in Villain Towers, but I hadn't quite appreciated how much he's been involved in till reading this. Wonderful stuff!!
ReplyDeleteI thought I'd pulled this selection out of nowhere, purely based on his birthday, but I've since realised that Phil released his second solo album in Sep 2022, a mere 34 years after his debut! I must have read about it and subconsciously plucked it when generating ideas for a post.
