Saw this yesterday and dove right in. I fully endorse every Tiny Desk Concert, they pick the best artists, and I;ve not seen a bad performance or song yet, even on the artists I've never heard before. This one from PJ Harvey is especially wonderful and emotional. Thanks for calling it out and sharing the link here, more people need to see this.
ReplyDeleteI'm relatively new to the Tiny Desk Concerts so I'm continuing to dip into the archives as new ones pop up. I agree that every one so far has been special. PJ Harvey, John and James were an unexpected addition but couldn't fail to be anything other than brilliant.
Delete'donds on Tiny Desk Concerts - some cracking intimate performances over the years. Looking forward to this Khayem, thanks as always. anwe
ReplyDeleteYou will not be disappointed, anwe.
DeleteI'm not surprised at that reaction - her voice is so fantastic. Big shout out to John Parish who must have been involved in most of PJ's recorded output - I stood next to him at the Bath Forum for about 30 mins earlier this year and wanted to just say thank you for the work with PJ and Aldous Harding..
ReplyDeleteSeeing PJ Harvey live in concert was one of the few occasions I've been able to bear being in the O2 Academy in Bristol. As for John (and James, in fairness)... legend!
DeleteGood use of the word dove. I also like the word drug, as in dragged. Nick Lowe once managed to pair them up ("I dove in and drug him out" ) in his song Indian Queens.
ReplyDeleteP J Harvey scares me btw; should she? Is there a safe route in?
JM
Great, isn't it? I'd recommend checking out the lyrics for these songs on Polly's website https://pjharvey.net/lyrics/ as she includes a footnote with the word meanings and poetic touchstones for each. Fascinating stuff.
DeleteI posted a selection of PJ Harvey live performances a log while ago but I really should get around to a full-blown studio selection too though I am missing a few of her albums.
I loved those early albums and the first Peel Sessions collection is superb. Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea is held up as one of her more accessible albums but I've loved every one I've heard, even though they're all quite different. The two John Parish & Polly Jean Harvey albums are also worth investigating.
However, the safe route in that I would suggest would be starting with an interview. This one with Frank Skinner at last year's Hay Festival is just beautiful
