No Bitter Endings And No False Starts

Oh, this is good. I've liked but not closely followed Sleater-Kinney in the past 30 years and have pathetically little of their music in my collection. However, the video for Say It Like You Mean It dropped on Wednesday and has wormed it's way into my head.

Little Rope, which I think is their 12th album if you count last year's covers album Dig Me In, is out in January, and Say It Like You Mean It is the second preview song. Hell, the album opener, came out in October and features an equally stunning video co-directed by and starring Miranda July.

Sleater-Kinney returned to the original core duo of Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker in 2019 and Little Rope is an album born of tragedy. While vacationing in Italy a year ago, Carrie Brownstein’s mother and stepfather were killed in a car accident. The Italian Embassy couldn't reach Carrie directly and so it was Corin (listed as Brownstein's emergency contact on a previous passport application) who heard first and had to break the news to her friend.

There's a half-hour interview with Carrie and Corin, also from last month, which delves into the making of the album and their working partnership. It touches on but doesn't dwell on the departure in 2019 of long-time member Janet Weiss, clearly a significant part of Sleater-Kinney and the song writing process for over twenty years. I've only dipped in and out of parts of the interview so far but it's an interesting view.

The two singles are available now, with Little Rope following on 19th January. Another one to add to the 2024 shopping list.
