Darren In The Underworld

Inspired by Swiss Adam's return visits to some classic Darren Emerson and Underworld tracks and mixes over at Bagging Area and the coincidental inclusion of an Underworld remix on the cover-mounted Depeche Mode compilation CD available with the current issue of Mojo magazine, I've thrown caution to the wind and jumped on the bandwagon.

I've cherry picked half a dozen remixes from 1993 to 2003, classics all, and generous with beats and breaks. It's impossible for me to pick a favourite from this bunch.

1) Human Behaviour (The Underworld Dub (1)): Björk (1993)
2) Harlequin - The Beauty And The Beast (Underworld Alternative): Sven Väth (1994)
3) Sunset (Bird Of Prey) (Darren Emerson Remix): Fatboy Slim ft. Jim Morrison (2000)
4) David (Darren Emerson's Underwater Remix): GusGus (2003)
5) Schmoo (Underworld Mix): Spooky ft. Heather Sian Wildman (1993)
6) Risingson (Underworld Mix): Massive Attack (1997)

    1. Adam, I enjoyed your posts so much that they've been randomly popping up on my playlist every day since. Looking forward to hearing your Sunday mix when it's time, bound to be another excellent installment in the series.

  2. Nice selection there Khayem, Essex boi done good! Helped take a silly synth band & make them world class, his part on those 3 LPs of Underworld Mk2 added something that I felt was lacking once he left - not that there aren't some storming tunes by Hyde & Smith since Emerson's departure - but there was a texture,a layer missing somehow. mind you, hard to live up to the jewel that is dubno...
speaking of storming Mk2s - this Dub 2 version of Human B https://www.discogs.com/release/251539-Bj%C3%B6rk-Bj%C3%B6rk-In-An-Underworld-Adventure has long been a fave, hard to track down tho' My exposure came via this https://www.discogs.com/release/112385-Justin-Robertson-Journeys-By-DJ which is worth seeking out for a blast of old skool fun & jollies.
cheers - keep up the gurt lush stellar work :-)

    1. Many thanks, anwe. I know what you mean: I think Emerson, Hyde & Smith are all continuing to produce great work, but the combination of all three gave Underworld something that no other act at the time had. On the back of Swiss Adam's posts, I've been listening to their music and remixes from the early to mid 1990s and it really stands up.

Good shout about Justin Robertson's Journeys By DJ. I had the cassette that was given away with Select magazine - did it ever get a 'proper' release on CD? The Dub 2 of Human Behaviour closed out the mix and, as you say, it's a stormer.

More gert lush tunes coming up this month, hopefully!
