Only Simple Words Please

Unexpected but welcome news of a new release featuring A.R. Kane, albeit remixing another band, Whitelands

The latter are a Middlesex-based trio inspired by shoegaze and have been around since 2017 but I'll confess that this is the first I've heard of them.

Setting Sun was originally released in February and will feature on the upcoming 3-track Remixes EP, out 23rd June. A.R. Kane have provided two reworkings of Setting Sun, the "Hero Remix" which clocks in at 11 minutes and 17 seconds, and the "Initiation Dub", coming in at under 5 minutes.

The dub version opens up the EP and is available now on YouTube and Bandcamp. Despite the title, it's a full vocal version, which replaces many of the shoegaze elements, whilst bringing the bass to the fore and furnishing the song with electronic ripples, breakbeats and feedback effects. I like it and I'm looking forward to seeing how the super extended version plays out.

The EP is completed with a remix of 2022 track How It Feels by howdogirlssleep which, according to the promo is a "dazzling drum’n’bass take" by Whitelands guitarist Michael. you can pre-order the Remixes EP here and buy Whitelands previous releases here.

The A.R. Kane remixes are a solo venture by Rudy Tambala but give me a good excuse (if any is needed) to include go back to the original duo of Rudy and Alex Ayuli and one of their finest moments from 1989.

A Love From Outer Space is also available, along with other A.R. Kane releases via Luaka Bop on Bandcamp.

The band and song title were also a huge influence on Andrew Weatherall and Sean Johnston, so the timing of a new A.R. Kane remix feels good, given the recent celebrations around Lord Sabres 60th birthday and the imminent release of new music from Johnston's Hardway Bros project.
