Games Without

I've been enjoying Front Tears by Picotropico for the last couple of months, since Swiss Adam signposted me to Paper Recordings' The Wild Army Vol.5 EP, via an excellent remix of The Secret Soul Society by Hardway Bros.

The Paper Recordings press release for the EP sums it up: "Mexico's finest export Picotropico flips an 80s classic (the clue's in the title) into a Balearic monster. Added bass, percussion, synths plus a whole load of dance floor know-how serves up a rework that is super fresh."

Picotropico is keyboard player, songwriter, soundtrack composer, producer & DJ Francisco Azpiri, born in Mexico City 1972. He released his first album, Plan De Contingencia, in 1997 in collaboration with Kristian Hannikainenas as Poncho Kingz. A second album, Buena Onda Chilling Club, emerged in 2009. Along the way, Azpiri has worked with Bebel Gilberto and Brazilian Girls, as well as producing bootleg remixes of Depeche Mode, Love And Rockets and Ladytron. As the Paper Recordings promo implies, his latest effort spins the bassline and titular French language refrain of Peter Gabriel's Games Without Frontiers off into the sunset, a compelling listen.

You can buy the song individually on Bandcamp but I'd recommend buying the entire EP, even if the Hardway Bros remix weren't already reason enough to do so. The other tracks are equally good, and there's an unexpected appearance from Mike Watt (Minutemen, fIREHOSE) teaming up with Japanese producer R-04 on the very funky Konban Wa.

Here's an earlier remix/re-recording of Games Without Frontiers from 1992, featuring Massive Attack, previously only available on the Steam EP. You can now buy it individually on Bandcamp (and other online retailers) or, if you have 30+ quid to spare, as part of the mammoth 62-track collection of B-sides, remixes and rarities, Flotsam And Jetsam 1976-2016.
