All Wrapped Up Again

Side 1 of an Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark mixtape, compiled 4th to 5th June 1990.

I posted Side 2 of this cassette compilation on 16th November 2021...where has the past year gone?! It's one of the odd temporal shifts of committing to a daily blog post. There's a spontaneity about coming up with something new each day (especially as I rarely plan posts way in advance). The flipside is that it's a bit of shock when I realise that nearly 400 posts have been appeared since I last revisited this dusty old tape. That's a lot of music and a lot of writing rambling...!

On a personal level, O.M.D.'s first four albums are an astonishing feat and still send a shiver down my spine when I listen to them now. Of the many hundreds of mixtapes that I recorded, this is one that I just kept coming back to and it was one of a select few that accompanied me on my year in Australia as a naive but adventurous 19 year-old.

I've seen O.M.D. live in concert twice, the second time on 8th November 2019 (again, where has the past year gone?!) where they played an unexpectedly and stunning version of Sealand. The song closes Side 1 of third album Architecture & Morality as well as this selection and for me remains one of their finest moments, amongst many.

1) The New Stone Age (1981)
2) I Betray My Friends (1980)
3) The Misunderstanding (Album Version) (1980)
4) Statues (1980)
5) Messages (Album Version) (1980)
6) Mystereality (1980)
7) Pretending To See The Future (Album Version) (1980)
8) Enola Gay (Album Version) (1980)
9) She's Leaving (Album Version) (1981)
10) Genetic Engineering (Album Version) (1983)
11) Sealand (1981)

1980: Red Frame/White Light EP: 2
1980: Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark: 5, 6, 7
1980: Organisation: 3, 4, 8
