Celebrating Keith LeBlanc, born circa 1954/55, who passed 4th April 2024. Another huge loss.
I'm going to appropriate and paraphrase a comment made by Swiss Adam at the weekend in relation to Richard Norris, as it feels just as relevant here. Keith LeBlanc's contribution to music runs through my record collection like the proverbial stick of rock but with the words LeBlanc Beats instead of Blackpool.
I became aware of Keith LeBlanc in the late 1980s due to my interest in all things Adrian Sherwood/On-U Sound and a couple of remixes that he'd done for Zeke Manyika and The Godfathers. I realised later that Keith's partnership with Doug Wimbish and Skip McDonald went back further, to their time as the Sugar Hill backing band.
I can't begin to capture the breadth and depth of Keith's impact on music but his ability to span multiple decades and genres is a testament to his abilities, whether at a drum kit or the controls in the studio.
This on the fly selection therefore focuses on some of the key tracks for me from that period of 1984 to 1995 when I was introduced to and educated in Keith LeBlanc's pivotal role. There's some On-U here via Tackhead and Fats Comet, Sugar Hill is represented with Rapper's Delight, Scorpio and Funk You Up and further seminal tracks featuring Malcolm X, Arthur Scargill and Ché and remixes of the aformentioned Zeke Manyika and The Godfathers, as well as The Cure, Nine Inch Nails and The Wolfgang Press.
There's so much more out there to discover and enjoy, not least Keith's substantial catalogue of solo releases, many of which are available on Bandcamp.
Thanks for everything, Keith. The beat goes on....

Another sad loss and another excellent selection. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI had a night on the tiles with that Zeke Manyika once. Nice man.
Friend of the stars! That's a story I'd like to hear, Ernie!
DeleteGreat selection Khayem, along with the rest of the ON U collective Keith was a true pioneer.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Adam, On_U were life changing in respect of my music education. Still gives me a thrill to hear any of their work, on or outside of the label. Keith truly was something else.
DeleteSuch a loss of such a pioneer - so many records in my collection bear his imprint in direct or inspirational ways. Glad I got to meet him (& Doug) 10 years ago, however briefly. R.I.P. Thanks for the selection Khayem - great as always! anwe
ReplyDeleteThanks, anwe, that must have been some meeting. Happy you had the opportunity to meet Keith and Doug back then.
DeleteSad,sad news...huge On-U fan & especially KLB, Wimbish, Skip. Thanks for sharing this & breaking the news to me, as hard as it is to get my head around.
ReplyDeleteThanks, NØ. It's been a sad start to 2024 with so many losses already, but Keith's loss was a particular shock and has hit hard.
DeleteBitrate: 192 kb/s ? Surely Le Blanc beats deserve better treatment......im buggin, thanks.
ReplyDeleteHa ha, thanks, I know you what you mean!
DeleteI made a conscious decision when starting this blog to not post anything above 192 kb/s. In many cases, it's all I have digitally anyway but my hope is that people who enjoy my mixes will be encouraged to track down the music that's commercially available and buy a physical or digital copy.
Also, the lower bit rate echoes my amateurish but enthusiastic attempts at sequencing selections! ;-)
Comments like that from Anon really piss me off, even if it is disguised with a throwaway line at the end. Great response from you.....your reasons are identical as to why the tunes at TVV are also low-res.
ReplyDeleteThanks, JC. You were a major inspiration in getting this blog off the ground, so you know exactly where I'm coming from!
